MKCA
Manhattan is synonymous with tiny apartments. While us Brits imagine New Yorkers waft around airy loft spaces the majority of residents probably have more in common with dwellers of cramped Hong Kong apartments than what’s depicted in the movies.
MKCA has been in business nearly fifteen years with their sleek and diverse projects having been lauded in Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Wall Street Journal and The New York Times to name a few.
It’s this simple yet well executed, sliding walled, sub 400 sq ft unit, named Five To One, that caught our eye. Traditional Murphy Bed solutions are a popular go-to but often lead to student-esque bedsit vibes. Here the divider not only hides the sleeping area during the day but also incorporates storage and an innovative TV mounting that allows viewing from the lounge area or bedroom.
One element of note is the horizontal lid to the dividing wall. A simple arm could have acted as a steady to the top of the unit, securing it to the back wall, presumably via some form of rail and channel arrangement. The additional horizontal piece serves to cloak the bed area during the day and adds a nod towards a cozy cocoon at night.
We could be reading too much into that and don’t have the original plans to hand, but overall this is an excellent example of how movement makes a space.
